Radish (Raphanus sativus) is an annual or biennial plant that belongs to the mustard family, or in other words, the Brassicaceae family. The plant is native to Asian or Mediterranean origin and grown worldwide.

As you might already know, we use the plant for culinary purposes, and because radish is very popular while being low in calories, it’s very often eaten raw. The plant is grown for its sizeable succulent taproot, but we can also cook the young leaves like spinach.

Where Did Radishes Originally Come From?

Radish is an anciently cultivated vegetable with no specific archeological origin records. Still, botanists have tentatively located its origin and concluded that it originates from Southeast Asia and the Mediterranean region.

It is even possible that they were domesticated in both Asia and Europe. And according to Herodotus, the radish was depicted on the pyramids’ walls about 4000 years ago, making it one of the essential crops in ancient Egypt.

Some reports show that China grew radishes nearly 2000 years ago while Japan, about 1000 years ago. Today, people grow them throughout the world, and some people prefer to use every part of the plant, including its roots, leaves, sprouts, seed pods, and the oil extracted from the seeds, according to their customs.

How To Recognize Radish?

We grow radish for its edible taproot, which has a different color according to its variety. The taproot’s shape is cylindrical or tapering, and it commonly has a red or white color. In addition, the plant produces many purple or pink flowers on racemes that produce 2–12 seeds.

Radish also has a short hairy stem and a rosette of oblong-shaped leaves with a length of 2 to 12 inches (about 5 to 30 cm). Then there are the top leaves, which are smaller and lance-like.

We generally grow it as an annual plant, which means that it survives only one growing season, when it can reach a height of 8 to 39 inches (about 20–100 cm), depending on the variety.

How To Grow Radish?

Radishes belong to the list of one of the easiest vegetables to grow. One good reason to grow it is its growing speed. Why? It usually only needs about four weeks from seed to harvest.

If you live in a climate where summer temps tend to get hot, growing radish might not be for you. This is because it prefers temperatures ranging from 40 – 70°F (about 4,4 – 21°C), while the most optimal range is 60 – 65°F (approximately 15,5 – 18,3°C). However, the biggest reason to grow radish during cooler temperatures is that hot temps may cause them to bolt, making them virtually useless.

Light

Radishes love to grow in a full sun environment where they get at least six hours of sunlight per day. But, partial shade works as well.

Water

Radishes love to get water but not too much of it either. So, the key to growing them successfully is to keep the soil moist but never soggy. The easiest way to achieve this in a home garden is to install a drip irrigation system.

Temperature

As we know, radish is a plant that grows pretty fast and well in cool climates. As for the best temperature, they grow the best when it’s somewhere between 40 to 70°F (about 4 to 21°C). But, the best temperature range is 60 to 65°F (approximately 15 to 18°C).

Soil

The plant loves well-draining sandy loam soil rich in organic matter, but remember that the soil pH needs to be between 5.8 and 6.8.

Fertilizer

Since radishes are a quick-growing plant, they don’t need a lot of fertilizing, but it’s good to know that rich, well-draining soil is necessary to build a foundation for a successful harvest.

There is no harm in giving some fertilizer, though. That’s why the plant will benefit when adding a small amount of fertilizer at regular intervals spaced over the growing season.
